Advancing Student Skills in Environmental Monitoring Using Earth Observation and LiDAR Data

Climate change is reshaping our landscapes, water systems, and ecosystems — making environmental monitoring more important than ever. New digital tools, such as satellite imagery (Earth Observation) and laser-based mapping (LiDAR), allow us to see environmental change with precision and act earlier and more effectively.

GreenScope helps universities and students learn how to use these technologies to monitor and protect the environment. The project brings together experts from across Europe to create training materials, online courses, and student innovation labs that show how digital technology can support real-world sustainability challenges.

Our vision is to empower the next generation of environmental professionals with the skills they need to understand our planet — and protect it.

Our objectives include the following

Identifying the essential skills and competences for smart environmental monitoring

Increasing awareness of the potential and limitations of digital technologies in environmental monitoring

Strengthening trust in data-driven environmental methods

Modernising Higher Education curricula with EO and LiDAR content

Building a multi-stakeholder European network for smart environmental monitoring
